Two overlapping boards, a beige rectangle and a teal circle, against a teal background. Showcasing vector drawings.
First board. A person with mid-brown skin, wearing a hijab, is sitting and leaning on a yellow platform. With their legs resting on a rounded teal platform. They are wearing a sweater and poppy coloured wide leg pants. Overlapping is a shorter person walking on a black platform. They are curvy, with dark-brown skin and a shaved head. With teal lips, a poppy loose shirt, and yellow pants.
Second board. An older person with dark-brown skin and white curly hair on their phone. Wearing poppy coloured glasses, a black collared shirt and teal pants. A person in a wheelchair with tanned skin holding a cup of coffee with a straw. They have a poppy coloured jumpsuit, piercings, black hair up in a bun with an undercut, and have a trach. Their teal power wheelchair has a bright yellow side bag. Both on a yellow platform. A fat person with vitiligo sitting on a poppy platform. They have poppy hair and beard, light skin, and are wearing suspenders with white pants and a teal shirt.
Let's be real. As designers and illustrators, what we choose to create can impact the way society is perceived. Which is why we have a responsibility to represent actual people. Not the "majority" or "targeted demographic" for sales. But people that exist in our world.
Which [last time I checked] includes a full range of identities from disability, sexuality, gender, ethnicity and race. As well as age and body-type. That's why I loved creating these vectors for @PauseAndEffect.ca as supporting graphics! They both gave me the space and helped in creating authentic people.
We made 5 characters and 4 nature based elements to embody their DEI for the people and planet. They got templates with a range of brand colours and skin tones to create as many variations as they'd like.
